Bird Society of Singapore’s first Bioblitz at Gardens by the Bay!

Gardens by the Bay is most well known for its towering Supertrees and majestic Flower Dome, but there’s one other aspect that is extremely important for making any garden feel alive – the birdlife!

The Bird Society of Singapore partnered with Gardens by the Bay on 16 March 2025 to conduct the first ever BioBlitz in GBTB. We teamed up with participants from the public and students from the Singapore Institute of Technology to conduct surveys over ~15 transects in the area. Many of the birds we encountered were common garden birds, identified by their plumage and calls.

Species including Singapore’s two most common sunbirds – Brown-throated and Ornate – gave some of us a good show, and others like the Collared Kingfisher provided nice views too despite the slightly cloudy weather. But the one species that united the three transect groups we had was…the Asian Koel! Every Singaporean’s favourite species 🙂

We also had a booth set up to showcase our work alongside other partners including the World Wildlife Fund and Tropical Ecology and Entomology Lab from NTU (thanks for sharing stories about your exciting projects with us!!).

We’d like to offer a huge thank you to the team from Gardens by the Bay for inviting us to this event.

And for all of you reading this post, the next time you are visiting Gardens by the Bay, keep your eyes peeled and ears open! You never know what feathered friends you might encounter on your next visit.

I would have loved to join this walk. I recently got my 1st pair of binoculars for bird watching… but I didn’t receive any email about this walk. How can I be sure to receive notifications for future walks so that I can actually join them?

Hi Annette, you can follow our instagram @birdsocsg where we publicise our events. On that note, we’ll be having a booth at the Festival of Biodiversity at the National Library over this weekend (31 May and 1 June 2025). Hope to see you there!
